a9 III avec obturateur global
A new movement
Equipped with the first2The world's largest full-frame image sensor with global shutter, the a9 III captures fast-moving subjects without any image distortion and split-second moments in stunning detail.
A new era of capture begins now
The a9 III features the first224.6MP full-frame stacked CMOS sensor3with global shutter. Unlike a rotary shutter sensor that records images from the top row to the bottom row of pixels, the new Exmor RS MD sensor exposes and reads the entire pixel, so the camera can capture fast-moving subjects without any distortion. With a maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 sec (1/16,000 sec continuous shooting)4, the a9 III is a game changer for professionals.

Exmor RS sensor with global shutter
The new 24.6 effective megapixel global shutter full-frame sensor features a stacked CMOS architecture and on-board memory. Thanks to its high resolution, blazing speed and simultaneous reading of all pixels, even fast-moving subjects are captured without distortion. Its stacked structure and advanced A/D conversion deliver minimal latency processing.
BIONZ XR MC image processing engine
Up to eight times7More powerful than previous ones, the BIONZ XR engine minimizes latency while significantly increasing image processing power. The large volume of data generated by the Exmor RS ™ sensor can be processed in real time, even when shooting continuously at up to 120 fps5. This greatly improves image quality, providing better gradation and more realistic colors while reducing noise. The camera can also capture high-quality 14-bit RAW images in all photography modes.
Composite RAW shooting reduces noise
Composite RAW shooting captures multiple images (4, 8, 16 or 32) which can then be merged with Imaging Edge Desktop ™ software to create high-resolution images with very low noise8. This allows you to photograph wildlife at high shutter speeds or portraits in low light, achieving exceptional quality with little noise, even at high ISO. Additionally, at low sensitivity, the a9 III can take advantage of the shake that occurs when shooting handheld and use composite RAW to create images with less false color and aliasing.

Uninterrupted shooting
Enjoy uninterrupted vision through the viewfinder, even when shooting fast continuously – ideal for photos of sports and fast-moving subjects. Additionally, the annoying latency typically inherent in viewing through an electronic viewfinder has been minimized, allowing fleeting moments to be captured with confidence.
Up to 120 AF/AE tracking calculations per second11
Let the camera do the tracking: the new ultra-fast image sensor allows up to 120 AF/AE tracking calculations per second11, double that of its predecessor. AF tracks complex subject movements and predicts sudden movements with unrivaled accuracy, while AE responds easily to sudden changes in brightness. The a9 III continues tracking even during continuous shooting, which also contributes to increased accuracy.

Don't miss anything thanks to precapture12
Precapture records the moments before the shutter releases. Adjustable from 0.005 to 1 s13, accessible in any file format up to 120 fps5With full AF/AE tracking, it can capture split-second moments, such as birds flying, even if the shutter release is late.
Accelerating continuous shooting speed
The Continuous Shooting Speed ??Acceleration function14temporarily increases the frame rate during continuous shooting This function is useful for sports shooting, when the key moment can be roughly predicted.
Real-time AF recognition15
The a9 III's innovative AI processing unit uses the subject's shape data to accurately recognize movements. Human pose estimation technology recognizes not only eyes, but also body and head position with high accuracy. It is thus possible for him to focus on a subject who is not facing the camera or whose face is hidden and to follow him. A distant human subject that occupies only a small part of the frame (even smaller than in previous versions of Real-Time AF Recognition) can be recognized if the subject is close to the focus area when the Shutter is pressed halfway while shooting in continuous AF mode. This can accelerate the acquisition of focus on an athlete approaching from a distance during an athletics or skiing event, for example.
Reliable recognition of a wider variety of subjects
AI ensures better recognition of Human, Animal/Bird, Animal, Bird, Insect, Car/Train and Airplane types15. In the Car/Train category, it is now able to recognize helmets, such as those of Formula 1 drivers. In addition to the eyes, heads and bodies of dogs, cats and similar animals, Animal can detect the eyes of certain ruminants and small animals . The Bird category has also been improved, better detecting the eyes and bodies of various birds. Plus, with the new Animal/Bird setting, you no longer need to change settings to photograph animals and birds.
Extensive, fast and accurate autofocus and tracking
The a9 III now has an AF system with 75916 phase detection points on focal plane which covers approximately 95.6% of the image. The large volume of data read by the image sensor is processed by the BIONZ XR processing engine, while optimized algorithms ensure high precision and density. This fast hybrid AF system combines the speed and tracking performance of phase-detection AF with the precision of contrast-detection AF to reliably focus on the fast-moving and/or irregularly moving subject.
Adjust AF tracking to subject movements
Whether the subject is moving, still, or changing speed, AF tracking is able to track it. Simply select the [Steady], [Standard] or [Responsive] setting, depending on the speed of the subject and the shooting situation.
Customizable focus area
Focus on what matters, thanks to the XL and XS spot sizes which complete the range. XS allows you to photograph wildlife by avoiding focus on branches in the foreground, for example. You can also customize the size of the focus area and even the vertical aspect ratio. When running on a track, setting the AF frame to a custom horizontal format can make it easier to focus on the lead runner.
Photograph responsibly when using face recording
The face recording feature involves the use of biometric data. You are responsible for the collection and use of such data and for compliance with applicable local laws. For more information, see the link below.
Flash sync at all shutter speeds
With a Sony compatible flash (e.g. HVL-F60RM2 or HVL-F46RM)6, the a9 III can fully flash synchronize up to a shutter speed of 1/80,0004 s. This allows the flash to be used to further illuminate the subject when shooting in bright daylight at high shutter speeds, reducing the need for large lighting fixtures and expanding the possibilities for creativity.
Flicker-free shots17
The global shutter sensor exposes all pixels simultaneously, so flickering can only occur from frame to frame. To reduce this, use anti-flicker or flicker-free shooting at high frame rates (Variable Shutter).
(1) a9 III (2) Rotary shutter image sensor
Shutter eliminates flash banding
The a9 III's sensor is equipped with a global shutter that exposes and reads all pixels at the same time, eliminating exposure differences that can occur when shooting. This eliminates flash banding common on cameras using a rotating shutter.
High-quality, full-frame videos
Distortion-free 4K movies with high resolution
Shoot 4K movies in Full-Frame or Super 35mm format (approximately APS-C). The a9 III captures 4K (3840 x 2160) video at up to 120p, and at 60p with full pixel readout and 6K upsampling for reduced moiré and aliasing.
4K 120p18without cropping a first in an a box
For the first time in the a range, the a9 III offers 4K (3840 x 2160) 120p video recording without cropping, allowing the full viewing angle of any lens to be exploited. For example, 4K footage shot in slow motion at 120p and 24p normal speed footage of the same scene will have the same viewing angle, and can therefore be edited without requiring cropping.
S-Cinetone MC for cinematic rendering
Sony's S-Cinetone picture profile offers the same color technology as the highly regarded Cinema Line range, producing beautiful colors and skin tones. The s-Cinetone profile produces natural mid-tones that give skin a radiant appearance, as well as soft colors and beautiful, luminous highlights. This allows creators to concentrate on filming while achieving a cinematic look without the need for color grading.
Compensation for a constant viewing angle when focusing19
Focus breathing compensation effectively reduces focal fluctuation when shooting videos. Sony's Clear Picture Zoom technology maintains a consistent viewing angle during focus changes, for more stable images.
Stabilization in dynamic active mode20
The ultra-precise stabilization unit, built-in gyro sensors and optimized image stabilization algorithms enable advanced electronic stabilization to work with 5-axis optical stabilization in a dynamic active mode that improves stabilization by more than 30 % (approximately) compared to the existing active mode21.
Automatic framing22
Using AI-based subject recognition technology, Auto Crop automatically crops the image to keep the subject in prime position in videos. Even though the camera is mounted on a tripod, the framing is constantly adjusted so that the sequences appear to have been filmed by an experienced cameraman.
Intuitive operation, very reliable
Uniquely flexible adjustable screen – shooting freedom
The a9 III is equipped with a 4-axis rotatable screen combining the utility of a classic tilting screen with the angular flexibility of side opening, for free vertical and horizontal adjustment. Excellent viewfinder performance
9.44 million dot (approximately) OLED viewfinder provides 0.9x magnification24with wide field of view of 41º and a 25 mm high viewing eyepiece25. Its original optical design minimizes the aberration that can be annoying around the viewfinder image for a more consistent visual experience. Viewfinder and screen latency have also been reduced for more stable framing, especially when shooting continuously. Viewfinder frame rate is adjustable to Standard (60 fps), High (120 fps), or Best (240 fps)26. The 240fps setting allows for minimal camera shake in the viewfinder when shooting moving subjects, or when panning or tilting.
Two CFexpress Type A memory card slots
In addition to UHS-I and UHS-II SD cards, the a9 III supports CFexpress Type A cards. They are ideal for continuous shooting up to 120 fps5 : their high writing speed allows the buffers of devices with large image volumes to be quickly emptied. Saving to different media depending on file type, image size and quality helps streamline workflow.
Optional VG-C5 vertical handle
The optional VG-C5 vertical grip provides remarkable comfort and maneuverability for extended shooting sessions. The grip and shutter button have the same ergonomic shape as the camera body. Access to the controls is also similar, with an independent customization button on the front (C5), a front dial, rear L and R dials, and a lock function on the D dial. The VG-C5 Vertical Grip holds two NP-FZ100 batteries for extended shooting sessions.
Robust reliability for harsh environments
The a9 III offers exceptional dust and moisture resistance, thanks to silicone rubber seals around buttons, lens lock button, lens mount and other areas. The electronic viewfinder design effectively seals the optical path of the viewfinder. Used with dust and moisture resistant lenses and flashes, and with the optional VG-C5 grip, the a9 III forms a highly dust and moisture resistant system27.
Robust and durable
Thanks to the lightweight and very rigid magnesium alloy used for the top cover, front cover, internal chassis and rear cover, the a9 III stands out for the durability of its housing, its high impact resistance and its capacity to dissipate heat effectively. It is designed to withstand harsh professional environments while remaining relatively compact and lightweight.
Blackout curtain closed when power off
A blackout curtain protects the image sensor from dust and particles when changing lenses. When set to ON, it automatically closes when the power is turned off.
Ergonomic handle design
The a9 III features a newly shaped grip that improves grip and reduces physical strain on the user, even when shooting for extended periods or with heavy telephoto lenses. The ergonomic design makes the handle conform to the user's hand for a secure, fatigue-free grip.
Streamlined workflow
Improved group display
Efficiency is optimized using image groups. Burst images shot up to 120 fps5can be defined as groups, making it easier to locate a particular image within a group of images. These groups can be assigned a rating, useful for filtering and searching, and which is retained after the images are imported into an editing application28.
Built-in Wi-Fi for FTP transfers and smartphone transfers, plus PC remote control
Built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11ac) allows the a9 III to transfer data up to twice as fast as its predecessor. Communication at 5 GHz29provides maximum speed and stability, which is essential for news reporters who need to deliver images immediately. The simple interface allows easy transfer of photos and videos via FTP server, Wi-Fi, wired LAN or USB connection with a smartphone.
Record crisper voice memos
Add voice memos to still images with the camera's built-in microphone on the rear panel, close to the user's mouth to enhance recording. Voice memos can be transferred to an FTP server with the corresponding images, which allows effective communication with the editor. The photographer can also use the Transfer & Tagging mobile app (version 1.9 or later) to convert voice memos to text30.
Multiple IPTC Presets
IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) metadata can be added to photos, with the a9 III capable of storing up to 20 presets which are then quickly accessed as needed. This is used during multi-sport events, for example, when different IPTC information is required depending on the competition.
