The Sony a7 III Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera stands out with its updated sensor design, making it a versatile camera for both photos and videos in different situations. It features a new 24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor that improve image quality, video performance, and autofocus. The a7 III also has a redesigned body with a new touchscreen LCD, better electronic viewfinder (EVF), a larger battery, and dual memory card slots.
24.2MP 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with back-illuminated design
Sensitivity range up to ISO 51200 (expandable to ISO 50-204800 for stills)
Fast Hybrid AF with 693 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection AF points
High-speed continuous shooting of up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking
4K HDR movie recording capability
An entirely renewed image sensor and image processing system further enhance image quality. Improved overall AF performance, high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10fps1, 4K2 movie recording capability, and operability that has been dramatically upgraded from the α7 II allow more decisive moments to be captured.
The 35mm full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor has a 24.2-megapixel resolution and uses back illumination and a gapless lens design for great sensitivity and dynamic range. It reads data twice as fast thanks to copper wiring and advanced front-end LSI.
The new image processing system and sensor together improve image quality by up to 1.5 stops. The camera has a wide ISO range up to 51200 and offers around 15 stops of dynamic range at low ISO settings. Enhanced Detail Reproduction and Area-specific Noise Reduction help reduce noise and keep the image sharp. Colour reproduction, especially for skin tones and nature scenes, is also much better. The α7 III supports 14-bit RAW output even during silent or continuous shooting.
The updated image processing system and α9 camera AF algorithms, specially tuned for the α7 III, boost autofocus speed, accuracy, and tracking. With 693 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points, the camera offers wide and detailed coverage. The AF speed is up to twice as fast, and tracking is more precise, letting you keep focus on fast-moving subjects. The α7 III can also autofocus reliably in very low light, down to EV-3 brightness.
Phase-detection autofocus works even with an A-mount lens attached to the α7 III using an LA-EA3 adaptor. The camera’s 693-point phase-detection AF system offers wide coverage, quick response, and excellent tracking performance.
Eye AF now works with AF-C mode, offering better precision for stunning portraits. It also has faster autofocus, making it easier to capture moving subjects, even if they're looking down, away from the camera, or backlit. The α7 III supports Eye AF with A-mount lenses when using an adaptor.
The new AF-ON button lets you start autofocus without needing to half-press the shutter button. This helps you focus more on the perfect moment to take the shot. The multi-selector lets you quickly and easily change the focus point, so you won't miss any great shots of moving subjects.
AF tracking sensitivity can be adjusted in five levels for subjects that move outside the focus area. Autofocus areas and points stay the same or adjust when you switch between horizontal and vertical shots, depending on what you’re shooting. You can save your favourite focus point settings and assign them to custom buttons for quick and easy access whenever you need them.
With the new shutter and image processing improvements, the α7 III can shoot continuously at up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking (or up to 8 fps with minimal lag in live-view mode). This makes it easy to capture fast-moving subjects. You can take about 177 JPEG images, 89 compressed RAW images, or 40 uncompressed RAW images in one burst. The electronic shutter also allows for silent, vibration-free shooting, which is perfect for wildlife and other situations where even a small noise might scare off the subject.
In continuous shooting mode, you can view images in groups and quickly delete or protect them all at once. The camera’s higher burst capacity and UHS-II media compatibility make saving data to memory cards much faster. You can also adjust settings using the Fn button and menu button right after shooting, even while the data is still being saved.
The camera automatically detects flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lights and adjusts the shutter timing to reduce its effects on your photos. This helps prevent exposure and colour problems at the top and bottom of images taken with high shutter speeds, and it reduces colour and exposure inconsistencies between continuous shots. This means you can take indoor photos with more confidence.
High-resolution full-frame 4K movies are recorded with full-pixel readout, which means the camera captures about 2.4 times more data than needed for 4K movies (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). This reduces issues like moiré and jaggies. Advanced image processing allows you to shoot full-frame 4K movies with great quality even at mid-to-high ISO settings. You can also choose to use Super 35mm mode instead of full-frame if needed.
The α7 III supports various HDR movie production needs with both S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma curves, giving you flexibility to adjust colours in post-production. It also has a new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile for instant HDR playback. You can enjoy high-quality, true-to-life images with no blocked shadows or blown highlights on an HDR-compatible TV, without needing to do colour grading.
The α7 III offers many features to help professional videographers, including clean HDMI output, time code/user bits (TC/UB), recording control, marker display/setting, zebra function, Slow and Quick Motion, simultaneous proxy movie recording, the ability to extract and store stills from movies, and Gamma Display Assist, among other options.
The camera has a 3.0-inch LCD screen with 922,000 dots that works as a touch screen, providing bright and clear views even in bright outdoor conditions. You can use Touch Focus to instantly focus on a point you touch on the screen, and Touch Pad to move the focus frame with your finger while you look through the viewfinder. The LCD can tilt up to 107° and down to 41°, making it easy to hold the camera and see the shot from different angles.
The α7 III uses a mix of focal-plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detection AF to accurately focus on fast-moving subjects and keep them tracked smoothly during video recording. The AF coverage for movies is almost as wide as it is for still images, so once the camera locks onto a subject, it keeps tracking it steadily. You can also choose from three AF drive speed settings to create slow focus effects in your movie scenes.
My Menu lets you save and organize up to 30 menu items by how often you use them, so you can quickly find what you need. You can also delete items you don’t use. You can set up a custom menu for your specific shooting needs. The α7 III also has its main menus restructured to make it easier to search, with group names and page numbers displayed at the top.
You can rate still images from 1 to 5 stars, and these ratings will be kept when you import the images into PlayMemories Home or the new Imaging Edge software from Sony on a PC. You can also set up a custom button (C3 by default) to protect images from accidental deletion. You can apply ratings and protection while reviewing images, and you can also review, protect, or delete image groups while you’re on location or traveling.
You can save camera setups (up to two in the camera and four on a memory card) for quick access using the mode dial. You can assign up to 81 functions to 11 custom keys, and set different functions for stills, movies, and playback. The Recall Custom Setting During Hold function lets you temporarily access shooting settings assigned to custom buttons just by holding down that button.
This camera features a high-resolution OLED viewfinder with about 2.36 million dots, offering clear and detailed images from corner to corner. It has a magnification of 0.78x and a 38.5° diagonal field of view. The ZEISS T* coating reduces reflections on the viewfinder lens, and it starts up about 40% faster than the α7 II. You can also set the view mode to ‘High’ for more detailed and natural-looking images, taking full advantage of the 24.2-megapixel sensor.
This system helps reduce five types of camera shake that can blur your images: pitch/yaw shake when using long lenses, X/Y shake in close-ups, and roll shake during night shots or video. It provides up to 5 stops of extra stability, so the α7 III can use its high-quality imaging and live-view features to their full potential. It works with both A-mount lenses (using an adaptor) and E-mount lenses.
Location Information Link via Bluetooth
You can connect the camera to the Imaging Edge Mobile app on a compatible phone or tablet. This lets you add location data to your photos and adjust the camera’s date, time, and location settings.
Smooth PC tethering via USB 3.1 Gen 1 port
The USB Type-C™ port supports fast USB 3.1 Gen 1, which allows quick transfer of large RAW files to a PC. This lets you review images quickly on your computer and keep shooting without interruption. There's also an option to transfer only JPEG files to the PC, so you can check your images faster after shooting continuously since the camera doesn't have to send large RAW files.
For long shooting sessions, the NP-FZ100 battery has about 2.2 times the capacity of the NP-FW50 battery, letting you take around 710 photos on a full charge. You can also use the VG-C3EM Vertical Grip to hold two batteries. The USB Type-C™ and Multi/Micro USB ports let you power the camera with external mobile batteries for extended recording. You can even use accessories like a remote control through the Multi/Micro USB port while powering the camera via the USB Type-C™ port. For faster charging, you can use the BC-QZ1 optional battery charger instead of charging through USB.
This camera has two media slots: one for SD cards (compatible with UHS-II for quick data writing) and one for SD cards or Memory Sticks. You can use both cards to record data at the same time or one after the other. You can also separate RAW data from JPEGs, stills from movies, or copy data from one card to the other. The memory card cover can be locked to stop it from being opened by accident.
The α7 III performs well even in tough conditions. Its body is made of lightweight, strong magnesium alloy for the top cover, front cover, and internal frame. The camera now has six lens mount screws for added durability. Most buttons and dials are sealed, and the entire body is designed to keep out dust and moisture.
With a one-touch remote, you can turn your smartphone or tablet into a viewfinder or remote control. One-touch sharing lets you quickly transfer photos and videos to your device for social media. Just install the Imaging Edge Mobile app on your NFC-enabled Android device, then touch it to the camera to connect. If your device doesn’t have NFC, you can use a QR code to pair them instead.
With the latest software update for the camera, flash, and Wireless Radio Commander (all sold separately), you can now adjust the settings of an attached flash or Wireless Radio Commander directly from the camera. You can control most settings, like light output, through the camera’s menu, and any changes will be displayed on the flash.
