Sony Alpha 7R IVA Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

The Sony Alpha a7R IVA is the newest model in a series of top-notch full-frame cameras known for their great photo and video quality and versatility. This fourth version features a 61MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and improved BIONZ X image processing. It can shoot up to 10 frames per second and record UHD 4K30 video, with support for Real-time Eye AF and Tracking AF technology. With 567 phase-detection autofocus points, the upgraded sensor design offers very fast and precise focusing. Despite its high resolution, it remains flexible in its sensing capabilities.

The main upgrade from the previous model, the α7R IV, is the rear LCD resolution, which has increased from 1,440,000 dots to 2,359,296 dots. Other than this, the a7R IVA has similar specs and performance to the a7R IV.

Stepping up to even higher resolution, the Sony a7R IVA advances the series of impressive full-frame cameras. This fourth edition boasts a new 61MP sensor, faster processing, better autofocus performance, and a broader range of features, making it great for both high-quality photos and videos.

The electronic shutter allows for silent, vibration-free shooting. Additionally, an internal damper structure reduces shutter vibration. These features contribute to sharply resolved images.

14-Bit RAW Output for Natural Gradations

The camera supports both compressed and uncompressed 14-bit RAW output for smoother gradations and higher image quality. The imaging engine’s 16-bit processing allows for 14-bit RAW output even in silent or continuous shooting modes.

5.76-Million-Dot UXGA OLED Tru-Finder

The new 5.76-million-dot electronic viewfinder offers high precision, brightness, and contrast, with 1.6 times the resolution of the previous model. The “High Display Quality” mode uses the 61.0 MP sensor to reduce moiré and jaggies. The 120/100fps “High” finder frame rate mode provides smoother motion, making it easier to track moving subjects. The fluorine coating helps keep the lens clean for better viewing and shooting in various conditions.

Wider, Faster, and More Steadfast AF Evolution

With increased AF point coverage and a better tracking algorithm, the camera provides reliable tracking of moving subjects. The Fast Hybrid AF system combines fast phase-detection and precise contrast-detection autofocusing, covering 99.7% of the height and 74.0% of the width of the image area. It performs as quickly as the previous model, even with the high-resolution sensor.

Exceptional High-Speed 10fps Burst Shooting with AF/AE Tracking

The advanced algorithm enables high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking using the mechanical shutter. It also supports 8fps continuous shooting in live-view mode with minimal lag. When cropped to APS-C size or using APS-C mode, you can still get 26.2 MP images, which is useful for wildlife photography.

Up to 68 Images in Continuous Shooting

The increased buffer memory and UHS-II support allow for up to approximately 68 images in a 10fps burst. In APS-C mode, you can shoot about three times more photos than in full-frame mode. During data writing, you can still access the Fn menu, make setting changes, and review playback. A countdown of remaining images is displayed during playback.

Anti-Flicker Shooting

The camera automatically detects flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lights, timing the shutter to minimize flicker effects on still images. This reduces exposure and colour issues in high-speed shots and between continuous shots, making indoor shooting more reliable.

Dual Media Slots, Both Supporting UHS-II

The camera has two SD card slots, both compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II for fast data writing. You can use both cards to simultaneously record or relay data, separate RAW from JPEG, stills from movies, or copy data between cards. The slide lock prevents accidental opening of the memory card cover.

Shooting for More Professional Lengths

The camera uses the large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery, similar to the previous model. Despite the higher resolution, the energy-efficient design matches the previous model’s battery life. An optional Vertical Grip (VG-C4EM) holds two batteries, and the Multi Battery Adaptor Kit (NPA-MQZ1K) holds up to four batteries for extended shooting. USB Type-C® and Multi/Micro USB ports also allow external batteries to power the camera for longer recording.

Enhanced Real-Time Eye AF (Human Eye) Delivers More Successful Portraiture

Real-Time Eye AF, combined with Real-Time Tracking, uses advanced AI for precise portrait shooting. It detects and tracks the subject’s eye with high accuracy. When "Face/Eye Priority in AF" is ON, Eye AF can be activated via a custom key, the AF-ON button, or by half-pressing the shutter button. You can choose which eye to focus on and the feature supports movie shooting as well.

Real-Time Eye AF for Animals Reliably Tracks Wild Animals and Pets

The new AI-based Real-Time Eye AF includes an algorithm for tracking animal eyes, improving focus accuracy for wild animals and pets. This feature supports all AF-C, AF-S, and AF-A modes.

Real-Time Tracking on the a7R IV maintains accurate focus while the shutter button is half-pressed, letting you focus on composition while the camera tracks the subject. The AI uses data on colour, pattern, and depth to track subjects, and it detects faces and eyes in real time for both stills and movies.

Focal-Plane Phase-Detection AF Supports A-Mount Lenses

The 567-point phase-detection AF system works with A-mount lenses attached via an LA-EA3 Mount Adaptor. This combination retains high-speed focusing even with high-resolution sensors, offering great flexibility for photographers using Sony and third-party lenses.

Low Noise at High ISO

The camera has a standard ISO range from ISO 100 to ISO 32000, with expandable options from ISO 50 to ISO 102400 for still images. This range helps achieve great image quality in almost any lighting condition, with minimal noise even at high sensitivities.

16-Bit Processing and 14-Bit RAW Output

The image sensor’s output is processed in 16-bit form by the front-end LSI and BIONZ X image processor before being saved as 14-bit RAW files. This provides smoother and more natural gradations, improving overall image quality. 14-bit RAW output is available even when shooting in silent or continuous modes.

Serious Speed Up to 10fps with AF/AE Tracking

With its advanced mechanical shutter and updated image processing, the camera can shoot full 61MP images at up to 10 fps with continuous and accurate autofocus (AF) and auto exposure (AE) tracking for about seven seconds in JPEG and RAW formats, and approximately three times as long in 26.2MP APS-C crop mode. This ensures fast-moving subjects are captured with high precision and detail.

The α7R IV features 567 phase-detection points in a high-density AF system, covering about 99.7% vertically and 74.0% horizontally.
