The Sony Alpha a7R IVA is the newest model in a series of top-notch full-frame cameras known for their great photo and video quality and versatility. The advanced algorithm enables high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking using the mechanical shutter. It also supports 8fps continuous shooting in live-view mode with minimal lag. When cropped to APS-C size or using APS-C mode, you can still get 26.2 MP images, which is useful for wildlife photography.
Up to 68 Images in Continuous Shooting
The increased buffer memory and UHS-II support allow for up to approximately 68 images in a 10fps burst. In APS-C mode, you can shoot about three times more photos than in full-frame mode. During data writing, you can still access the Fn menu, make setting changes, and review playback. A countdown of remaining images is displayed during playback.
The camera automatically detects flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lights, timing the shutter to minimize flicker effects on still images. This reduces exposure and colour issues in high-speed shots and between continuous shots, making indoor shooting more reliable.
The camera has two SD card slots, both compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II for fast data writing. You can use both cards to simultaneously record or relay data, separate RAW from JPEG, stills from movies, or copy data between cards. The slide lock prevents accidental opening of the memory card cover.
The camera uses the large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery, similar to the previous model. Despite the higher resolution, the energy-efficient design matches the previous model’s battery life. An optional Vertical Grip (VG-C4EM) holds two batteries, and the Multi Battery Adaptor Kit (NPA-MQZ1K) holds up to four batteries for extended shooting. USB Type-C® and Multi/Micro USB ports also allow external batteries to power the camera for longer recording.
Real-Time Eye AF, combined with Real-Time Tracking, uses advanced AI for precise portrait shooting. It detects and tracks the subject’s eye with high accuracy. When "Face/Eye Priority in AF" is ON, Eye AF can be activated via a custom key, the AF-ON button, or by half-pressing the shutter button. You can choose which eye to focus on and the feature supports movie shooting as well.
The new AI-based Real-Time Eye AF includes an algorithm for tracking animal eyes, improving focus accuracy for wild animals and pets. This feature supports all AF-C, AF-S, and AF-A modes.
Real-Time Tracking on the a7R IV maintains accurate focus while the shutter button is half-pressed, letting you focus on composition while the camera tracks the subject. The camera has a standard ISO range from ISO 100 to ISO 32000, with expandable options from ISO 50 to ISO 102400 for still images. This range helps achieve great image quality in almost any lighting condition, with minimal noise even at high sensitivities.
The image sensor’s output is processed in 16-bit form by the front-end LSI and BIONZ X image processor before being saved as 14-bit RAW files.
