Exmor™ CMOS for extra sensor perception

The α7S II features a 35mm full-frame 12.2-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor that provides a wide dynamic range and very low noise across an ISO range of 50-409600. Its large pixels and advanced light-capturing technology allow for high-speed shooting even in low light.

Smart, speedy BIONZ X™ image processing engine

The updated BIONZ X image processor improves image quality by optimising sensor performance for better detail in both stills and videos. It reduces noise and enhances image quality, especially at higher sensitivity settings.

Internal 4K movie recording and XAVC S format

The α7S II records 4K (3840 x 2160) movies internally in full-frame format. It uses full pixel readout without pixel binning to reduce moiré and jaggies. The XAVC S format supports 4K recording at up to 100Mbps, giving you detailed footage with minimal compression noise. Both internal recording and HDMI output are available in 4K resolution.

S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 and S-Gamut3/S-Log3

These new profiles expand the dynamic range up to 1300%, making colour grading and correction easier. The S-Log3 gamma improves tonal reproduction from shadows to mid-tones, while S-Gamut3.Cine covers the wide DCI-P3 colour space and S-Gamut3 captures almost all colours for archiving.

Movie functions improve professional workflow

New features like 120fps Full HD recording, 4x/5x slow motion, and enhanced Zebra functions help professionals with their workflow. These tools give you more creative options and control over your movie production.

5-axis optical image stabilisation

The 5-axis optical image stabilisation compensates for five types of camera shake, effectively letting you use slower shutter speeds without blur. This system helps with handheld shooting, providing greater stability and clearer images.

Fast Intelligent AF for levels as low as EV -4

The α7S II’s fast autofocus system with 169 AF points ensures accurate subject detection in low light conditions, down to EV -4. It also has twice the AF speed for Full HD movies compared to the previous model.

0.78x magnification XGA OLED Tru-Finder™

This electronic viewfinder offers high magnification and ZEISS® T* Coating for clear, high-contrast viewing with minimal reflection. It helps you see how settings like exposure and white balance affect your images and supports Gamma Display Assist and Zebra functions while shooting.

Supports 14-bit uncompressed RAW format

The α7S II’s new 14-bit uncompressed RAW format provides excellent tonal gradation, making the most of the sensor’s wide dynamic range.

Silent Shooting

Silent Shooting mode allows you to mute the shutter sound, which is useful for quiet environments like wildlife photography or concerts. You can use this mode with continuous shooting at 5 fps and assign it to a custom button for easy access.

Wi-Fi / NFC™ simplifies sharing

With built-in Wi-Fi and NFC, you can quickly transfer photos or videos to your NFC-enabled smartphone or tablet by simply touching the camera. This makes it easy to upload content to social media.

Capture One (for Sony)

Capture One Express (for Sony) is a free image editing software that offers high-quality RAW development and management. Capture One Pro (for Sony) is available for even more editing tools and tethered shooting.

120fps Full HD and 4x/5x slow motion recording

The α7S II captures high-frame-rate Full HD movies with full pixel readout, allowing for 4x/5x slow-motion recordings. You can record at 120fps (100fps) with minimal noise.

New Gamma Display Assist function

This function lets you see images with natural contrast while recording in S-Log gamma settings by converting S-Log2 and S-Log3 into ITU709 gamma. It helps with monitoring and focusing during recording.

Enhanced Zebra function

The Zebra function helps monitor exposure, especially when using S-Log gamma settings. You can select a target video signal level and see areas that reach that level, making it easier to adjust exposure.

Picture Profile

Picture Profile settings let you adjust the look of your movies before shooting. You can save and recall up to nine profiles with custom settings, including new profiles for S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 and S-Gamut3/S-Log3.

Clean HDMI Output

This feature supports 4K and Full HD output to an external recorder or monitor. You can record internally while sending a clean HDMI signal. A cable protector prevents accidental disconnection for more reliable shooting.

500,000-cycle Shutter Durability

The α7S II’s shutter is built to last with a durability of 500,000 cycles. The design reduces mechanical vibration, minimising camera shake and shutter noise. The electronic front curtain further cuts down on vibrations.

Meticulously Crafted Controls

The camera’s controls are designed for intuitive use. The front and rear dials are positioned for easy adjustment, and a new mode dial locking mechanism prevents accidental changes.

ISO Auto Minimum Shutter Speed

This feature helps prevent blur by automatically adjusting the shutter speed when using ISO AUTO in P or A mode, or Multi Frame NR mode.

More Precise White Balance Adjustment

The α7S II offers more precise white balance adjustments, with additional steps for better colour accuracy. This allows for finer control over white balance and more natural colours.

Enhanced Eye AF

Now also available in AF-C focus mode, Eye AF automatically detects and tracks an eye of even a moving subject, for more framing freedom.

Expand Flexible Spot

The Expand Flexible Spot option in AF Area selection helps focus more accurately by using surrounding AF points if the selected point isn’t on your subject.

Always Keep The Eye In Focus

The Eye AF feature provides accurate focus on the subject’s eye, even if they are moving. This tool is especially useful for capturing sharp portraits.

Compatibility with Wide-Ranging Mountable Lenses

The α7S II’s 5-axis image stabilisation works with a variety of mountable lenses, thanks to its short flange-back distance in the E-mount.

Bright Monitoring

Bright Monitoring boosts image brightness, which can be useful for shooting in low light conditions. This function can be assigned to a custom button for quick access.

Focus Magnifier & Peaking function

The Focus Magnifier helps with manual focus by enlarging the image. The Peaking function highlights the sharpest areas of your image, making it easier to confirm focus.

Power supply via USB

You can power the α7S II via USB connection to a PC or mobile battery, extending your shooting time without worrying about running out of battery. The USB connection also allows you to charge the battery when the camera is off.

Creative Style

Creative Style settings let you adjust the look of your photos by choosing from 13 styles (like Vivid or Portrait). You can also fine-tune contrast, saturation, and sharpness.

Picture Effect (13 modes)

Use Picture Effect modes to transform ordinary scenes into artistic images. Choose from 13 modes, such as Toy Camera or HDR Painting, and see the effects in real-time.
